UK Skilled Worker Visa
The UK Skilled Worker visa was implemented to attract highly skilled international professionals to fill gaps in the UK job market and potentially settle in the country permanently.
Under this visa category, skilled workers from abroad can be selected from the shortage occupation list, allowing them to receive a job offer without undergoing the labor market test. Visa holders are permitted to reside in the UK for up to 5 years.
Benefits of the UK Skilled Worker Visa:
Visa holders have the privilege of bringing their dependents along with them, and spouses are permitted to work under this visa category. There are no restrictions on the number of individuals who can relocate to the UK under this visa. Furthermore, the minimum salary requirement has been reduced to £25,600 from the previous threshold of £30,000. Fast Track Visas will be expedited for healthcare professionals such as doctors and nurses.
Outlook of UK Immigration Strategy:
This year presents significant opportunities for UK immigration, with the introduction of new pathways such as Global Business Mobility and Scale-up. The plan entails the introduction of fresh visa classifications alongside the consolidation or adjustment of existing ones. Notably, the new High Potential Individual visa offers accessible entry to graduates from leading global universities, enabling them to work without constraints and potentially settle in the UK if specific criteria are met.
- High Potential Individual Route: Tailored for graduates from prestigious global universities, this visa allows entry into the UK without a job offer, offering unrestricted work opportunities and potential settlement.
- Scale-up Route: Designed for talented individuals with job offers from recognized scale-up businesses.
Streamlining the Innovator Route: Introduction of a fast-track scheme for businesses with promising growth prospects, offering enhanced flexibility in funding options and the opportunity for applicants to engage in work beyond their primary business scope.
Global Business Mobility: Introduction of a new Global Business Mobility route catering to overseas enterprises.
The UK government’s strategic vision aims to position the country as a leading global innovation hub by 2035. The introduction of this accelerated visa program for attracting foreign talent is deemed crucial for the nation’s economic growth and employment prospects.
Furthermore, the UK faces labor shortages across various sectors, thus emphasizing the significance of UK immigration for recruiting highly skilled foreign nationals.

- Information Technology
- Finance
- Education
- Healthcare

To initiate the skilled workers’ program in the UK, applicants must secure a UK work permit. Subsequently, they are required to apply for Skilled Worker Visas upon receiving offers for skilled positions in the UK. Applicants must meet the minimum salary requirement of £25,600 to be eligible for Skilled Worker Visas, or the prevailing rate for the occupation.
New UK Immigration Points-Based Assessment System:
The UK introduced a new points-based immigration system in January 2021. Eligibility for UK skilled migration is determined by the ‘new points-based UK Visa system,’ which evaluates candidates’ skills based on various factors.
Candidates earn points under the UK New Points-based System, which ultimately determines their eligibility for the work visa.
To qualify for the UK work visa, applicants must accumulate a minimum of 70 points. Candidates receive 50 points if they possess an approved job offer for a skilled role and demonstrate proficiency in English.
The remaining 20 points can be obtained if the offered salary is at least £25,600 per annum. Additional points can be earned for higher qualifications:
- 10 points for a relevant PhD
- 20 points for a PhD in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) disciplines
- 20 points for a job offer in the skill shortages stream
- Certain occupations, such as health or education, automatically earn 20 points even if the salary is below £25,600.
